Ontario in Perspective

When I read, the other day, that Ontario was in a far greater and deeper mess than California ever was – and then saw the numbers – that really put things into perspective for me.

Would you believe that California, at its very worst, was nowhere near where Ontario is right now?  ‘Tis true…..and it should be darned frightening for any of us who live here.  Ontario’s debit is nearly twice that of California and yet our population is less.  Each Californian is on the hook for $3,844 of debt.  Each Ontarian???  saddled with a debt of $20,166.

Do you want to calculate what the interest payments on a debt of $272 billion (nearly twice that of California)  are each month?  My calculator won’t even go to that many zeros.  I do know that paying this interest takes up over 9% of revenues (2.8% in California).    From 2012/13 to 2015/16, net interest payments will represent the fastest growing expense for our provincial government – more than twice the projected rate of health care expenditures.

California has managed to turn itself around by making painful decisions to contain their indebtedness.  The  Fraser Institute says that Ontario could back away from the precipice it is in danger of toppling over by simply limiting the rate of increase in spending……not by cuts but by simply not spending wildly.  The report goes on to say that Ontario could start to get its books in order and still allow a small (0.8%) increase in per-capita spending annually.  That sounds pretty reasonable to me.

Could we do this?  Not with the current government with its spending culture and its “need” to live up to union expectations!  Over the past 10 years, spending on health alone grew by 7% each year and education by 10%.  Other program spending increases averaged 6.2% annually.  Ontario Hydro bills are projected to rise 42% in 5 years.

We need to start living within our means.  Isn’t that what each and every one of us has to do with our own lives?  Aside from the nearly perfect weather, California is looking pretty darned good right now!!!

What has happened to MY TEAM??

I am an avid Ottawa Senators fan – but at the moment, I am an angry fan.

What on earth has happened to these guys?  If I’m frustrated, Coach MacLean must be fit to be tied – I have no idea how he keeps his cool standing there behind the bench. I’m surprised he hasn’t had a stroke at this point.

All that skill out there – and they are completely demolished – game after game after game.  They often start out well and then they fall apart.  It is almost embarrassing and it is certainly very disappointing.

It can’t all be attributed to Alfredsson leaving, although I believe he was a much better leader than Spezza will ever be.  It can’t be that they aren’t paid enough money.   With their salaries one would expect 150% effort every time they step onto the ice!  It can’t be the Coach  – he has a proven track record and they worked well together when he took over last year.  It can’t be due to injuries – they have had less time lost to injuries than most of the other NHL teams.

They have been incurring far too many penalties – showing a total lack of discipline when we know they can do better.  Could it be that they simply don’t care …… about their fans?…..about winning?………about the job they are being well paid to do?   It certainly looks that way.

Season ticket holders must be even more angry and disappointed than I am and the team owner – apoplectic to say the least.

I don’t have any answers – just lots of questions – questions probably shared by all Ottawa fans.  This will hurt the team financially in the long run.

WHAT A BUMMER!

Just The Girls

I am fortunate to live on a street where, of the small number of 50 homes, 14 of us are single women.  Talk about an absolutely fabulous built-in support structure not to mention very handy friends.

In addition to going to the occasional concert, hockey game, movie or just out for fish and chips, we have even travelled together – 8 of us did a Danube River Cruise a few years ago.  The normal routine is to get together every 6 weeks or so at one house or another to solve the myriad of world problems (and to drink several gallons of wine).  As a rule, we are all close to home and could get there on our knees if need be.  If the truth be told, we did hear some rumours at the local Tim Hortons (or was it Starbucks??) about those party-hardy ladies of GC and the racket they can make when heading home late at night en masse from one of our gatherings.  While there are 2 single men on our street – they aren’t invited – no rationale required.

Last night we went “off-court” to the home of an adopted member of our group, one car behind the other….. the blind leading the blind…..two designated drivers…..two trunks full of yummy finger foods …….and the usual plethora (I love that word) of wine bottles.  Had the Ottawa Senators not completely lost it at the end of the 3rd period, blowing a 4-1 lead and ending up losing the game in overtime, the evening would have been a complete success.  Our hostess was kind enough to have the game on TV in the next room allowing a few of us hockey fans to slip out now and then to check progress.

Of course we talked about politics – with several Quebecers in the group, it was very interesting to get their take on the current silly scenario in that province with  Pauline Marois and PKP at the helm.  It seems pretty much everyone is totally fed up with the whole issue.   We covered Hydro rates, the upcoming increase in home heating gas prices, the behaviour of children, teens, and how it became so, bullying, teachers’ authority (or lack thereof), parental authority (or lack thereof), children and grandchildren, travel plans and wish lists (most of us have a wish list much larger than our bank accounts) – and very briefly – men. I’m quite sure there were other topics of conversation but I can’t be expected to remember them all!!

After one of these get-togethers I know I always come away feeling very thankful that I ended up on this perfect street of (almost) perfect neighbours and wonderful friends.  It couldn’t be a better situation for growing into those golden years.  Our single ladies group even ponders the thought of pooling our resources when the time comes to hire a fulltime RN or Home Healthcare Aide to scoot from one house to the other – sounds a lot less expensive than moving to a retirement home.  Some of these after-many-drinks ideas sound far-fetched until you really think about them – not such a bad idea after all.

Our next challenge is to come together with our travel wish lists so that everyone knows what everyone else wants to do over the next 5 years – where people have wish lists in common – it could very well be the makings of another fabulous group trip.

CARRY ON, GC GIRLS +1

It’s Never Over……Until It’s Over

Just when we had begun to relax as a country with 10 provinces and a few territories…….Just when the newspapers were no longer saying much about Quebec separation……along comes Pauline Marois – and now her sidekick PKP – they are calling an election – maybe an illegal one at that – and we’re right back where we were many many years ago.

Now – I don’t have an issue with Quebec as long as it minds its own business – it’s a beautiful province.  And I certainly don’t have any problem with those who live there – I’m sure they are all lovely people – and to speak more than one language is a good thing for anyone.

BUT……

As a taxpayer, I am tired of footing the bill to have all things bilingual even in places where nobody speaks french.

As a taxpayer, I am tired of finding more Quebecois folks in my Federal Government than Anglophones – especially in management positions……because they speak french – not because they speak decent english!!

As a person who lives just steps from the Quebec border, I’m tired of hearing about all the new rules that Quebecers and Quebec-based businesses must follow……what schools their children are permitted to attend, how their storefront signs must look, etc.  However – that is their business – and if those who live there are willing to put with these rules, I shouldn’t complain.  They don’t directly affect me.

I am hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst with this current situation. Should the potential she-devil win this upcoming election, fasten your seat-belts, folks – I think we will be in for a rocky ride.

If there is a new and renewed movement for Quebec Separation, I don’t want any sort of  handshake.  If they don’t want to be part of Canada, I think they should LEAVE and take their share of the national debt with them.  They should receive NO MORE hand-outs from OUR Federal Government – unless or until they become one of those 3rd world countries who truly need help – and even then, they will have to get in line with the others.  I’m tired of this.  It is time for us to move on.

I Am Still Here

I have been extremely delinquent in terms of posting to my blog and I’m not sure why.  Normally it doesn’t take much for me to want to share my opinion on something.  Goodness knows, there have been lots of things in the news and in general to “opine” about.

First – the weather.  This (so they say) has been the coldest winter in Ottawa in 20 years.  IN 20 YEARS!!!!  Just a little more than a week from today, we move our clocks ahead – SPRING FORWARD!  Who could possible be thinking about Spring when it’s still -20 outside?  Not to mention the hour of sleep we will lose and how dark it will be in the mornings for a while.  On the positive side, it will stay light longer during the day.

Next – Government.  I keep reading about the possibility of adding income splitting for all couples to the benefit already in place for senior citizens.  I don’t begrudge anyone a tax benefit – but where are the benefits for us single people who carry housing and many other costs all by ourselves???  There was a tidbit in the paper the other day that suggested the best way to get ahead – or to be more comfortable – financially was to get married.  DUHHHHHHH!!  I guess I’ll just run right out and do exactly that!!!  Any takers??

Can’t wait for a Provincial Election.  How ANYONE could vote this liberal government back in is way beyond me.  They are putting us in the poorhouse and many of them should be behind bars for what has transpired over the past years.

Talking about elections – I guess we are having another Municipal Election this year – and, so far, nobody appears ready to challenge Watson for the mayor’s job.  That is truly a shame.  I am NOT a fan.

Olympics – what great television we enjoyed for just over 2 weeks.  It certainly seems that Russia did a bang-up job in hosting these games and our athletes did very well.  Now it’s back to the usual stuff – keeping an eye on what “player” Juan Pablo is up to on The Bachelor, groaning at the lack of effort on behalf of my Ottawa Senators, and thoroughly enjoying the talent – and the banter among the judges – on The Voice.

Enjoy your day!!

My Life with Cats

We always had a dog while I was growing up.  I love dogs but when I decided to get myself a pet about 20 or so years ago, I was working full time and long hours at that.  A dog needs more time and attention than I was able to provide so I opted for a cat.

My first kittie was a rescue cat who came with a French name “Virgule” – which translates in English into “Comma”.  What a strange name for a cat!!  Virgule immediately became “Max”.  He was about 3 years old and a lovely striped grey tabby.  Max and I were learning how to manage a cat together – they sure aren’t like dogs!!  Here Max! – usually resulted in the opening of one eye and a sultry look as if to say “say, what…..???”.  I learned that, with cats, the sound of the can opener or shaking the treat bag does the trick.

After about 4 months, Max had his first episode – it was like a very strange and frightening seizure during which he became first very still and then he flung himself at me and bit!  Let me tell you, a cat bite is nothing to sneeze at!  Immediately after the “event”, Max would return to completely normal.  After I while, I realized that these seizures were often triggered by too much stimulation – if he was over happy, over mad, over playful – the result was not good.  He was a very large tabby and many of my friends were scared of him.  Other than the episodes, he was a very loving, friendly, cat and I loved him.

The vet was very interested in what was going on with Max (now known as Mad Max) so she consulted with the folks at the Guelph Veterinary College and learned that Max had what was called “Conflict Behaviour” – some wires in his little brain would get crossed every now and then and the result was a seizure and attack behaviour.  I got pretty good at getting something between us.  He didn’t need to bite me, he just needed to go through the motions – so a hit on a pillow or a magazine was just fine and then he was back to “normal”.  Options were to keep him sedated – I chose not to do this.  What good is a pet on drugs and dopey??

When Max was about 12, he started to lose weight.  Blood work was done – but because of his “attitude”, he had to be sedated for this.  Things went downhill from there and before the diagnosis could be finalized (it was a thyroid problem), Max went into a thyroid storm and his heart gave out.

I was devastated.  I cried as if I’d lost my very best friend.

Three weeks later I was poking on the internet and looking at various breeds of cats.  I came upon a Chantilly Tiffany up for adoption – in Kingston.  I headed out, cat carrier in hand – you can be sure I was going to come home with a cat.  Olivia was her name – 1 year old – all chocolate brown –even her nose and the pads on the bottom of her feet.   The breeder was willing to let her go since her mother, for some reason, wouldn’t tolerate her, they were constantly having to rescue her from harm – and her hair wasn’t quite long enough for “show”.  My cousin, Steve, actually purchased Olivia for me as a retirement gift.  Everyone likes Olivia.  She is graceful, quiet, and gentle (or so I thought at the time).

About 5 years later I thought another cat would make good company for Olivia.  Everyone told me cats do well with “others”.  Somehow I was talked into taking 2 foster kitties – not just 1!!  Axel Rose and Pink Floyd became Blaze (an orange tabby) and Herbie the Love Bug (a pint-size version of Max – a grey tabby).  They were just 4 months old when I got them and Olivia didn’t seem to pay much attention to them at all.

Then I moved to a new house and everything changed.  Olivia felt some strange need to assert her dominance in this new place.  She wasn’t at all intimidated by little Herbie – but Blaze – who has turned out to be a very large cat – and who doesn’t have a mean bone in his body – is another question.  He just has to look at her the wrong way and, without warning, she goes after him.  He can run pretty fast for all his large size – but she runs faster and usually comes away with a tuft of orange fur!!  Also – if Blaze and Herbie are playing, she seems to think they are truly fighting and jumps in to break it up!!  I never thought she had it in her to become a complete she-wolf in a nano-second…..but SHE DOES!

There has never been any blood spilled so I have learned to ignore all of this.  Non-cat people who are visiting are aghast if a flurry takes place under their noses – but that’s life with cats.  I think all 3 of them play games with me to see who can get me to react.

Breakfast is their favourite meal.  They don’t allow me to sleep in.  It starts with one, or two, cats walking across the bed.  I give up when I have a 23-lb orange tabby sitting on my chest.  Blaze has spoken.  They each get one ounce (basically a tbsp.) of wet cat food in addition to some dry kibble.  I rarely put my hearing aids in until after breakfast because the noise the 3 of them make is astounding.  You’d think I never feed them!!  Complete cacophony until the bowls are served.

They do have their idiosyncrasies.  Blaze loves to play with hair – particularly hair on which product has been applied – so watch out if you have gel or hair spray in your hair – it’s safer to sit in a chair with no back on which 1 large orange cat can sit.  Otherwise, you will be “groomed”.  Blaze “plays” by carrying a ball around in his mouth making all sorts of strange noises.  After all, when your mouth is full, all noises sound strange.

Olivia loves ice cream.  I can go to the freezer ten times in a day – but the minute the ice cream comes out of the freezer, she somehow knows it and turns up, even out of a deep sleep, and looks at me with that woe-begotten look on her face.  It’s actually a helpful thing – I save the ice cream for major treats and only on a once-in-a-while basis.

Herbie plays catch with himself.  He throws the little balls into the air, or down the basement stairs, and then chases after them – and will do this over and over.  He will actually bring a ball back to you if you toss it for him – but he never gets tired of this – so be careful what you start.

They are a constant source of amusement – and sometimes frustration – and they are always good company.  Seeing a cat in the window watching for me to come home and having at least 1 of the 3 (and sometimes all of them) greet me at the door when I come in – it’s a nice thing.  They do make it more challenging to travel or to do things on a spontaneous basis, but I can’t imagine a house without a pet.

Life with cats is a good thing.

The City Does it Again

A whopping 9 out of 10 councillors in the executive committee (read Jim Watson’s people) voted against a competitive process for a new Casino in Ottawa.  What is wrong with this picture?  How can you vote for something without even seeing what the options are?  How can you vote against the very nuts and bolts of process in public sector?

I want what is best for Ottawa – and I don’t care where it is!  I do understand the pros and cons related to Rideau Carleton Raceway but to approve it without having any details about other possibilities just does NOT make sense to me.  And now they have put a caveat on it – that the winning casino bidder (is there even a bidding process here?) must pay for transportation improvements around the track!!  They seem to be doing their very best to ensure the casino goes to RCR and then fails.  RCR themselves have said they couldn’t commit to paying for city infrastructure without seeing the costs.

There should, at the very least, be an open competitive process.  A PROCESS.  Imagine!  This is public sector.  The City of Ottawa has already sole sourced one very large project in Lansdowne Park.  They developed a process for a reason.  Why aren’t they using it?

The more I read, the more ridiculous it all appears.  Do we really have a bunch of buffoons making decisions on our behalf?  This is frightening!

My Latest Project

After a week (spread out over two) of hard work, my landscaping project is now complete and I LOVE IT!!

Not only does it look absolutely amazing, the only maintenance that I will ever have to do is to water my gardens and hose off the lawns in the spring after the snow has melted.  No more mowing (or paying for mowing).  No more fertilizing.  No more weeding (or paying for weeding).  No more nasty water bills.  No more grubs.  No more cinch bug.  Far fewer mosquitos.  No more angst that my lawn isn’t living up to the neighbourhood standards!!

I am so happy – and so lucky.  Pete Azzie and his team were absolutely THE BEST!  For those who are curious – it is EZ-Grass!  It looks and feels very real (it even has thatch in it).  Who could ask for more????

My Vacation – May 2013

I got back 10 days ago from what should have been my dream vacation in France and Italy (with a brief stopover in Monaco).

The itinerary was perfect – 6 nights in Nice, 1 night in Genoa and 5 nights in Viareggio – a beachside resort in Tuscany.

While the scenery was breathtakingly beautiful – and the number of yachts in each harbour unbelievable – the “tour” part of the package was too challenging for me…..starting with what felt like miles of walking in Charles de Gaulle airport!!  I’ve been in many airports, large and small, but this one ranks up there among the worst…….very spread out and nothing to see or do – just the occasional overpriced sandwich bar.  They even charged for internet service after a free 15 minutes at a kiosk.

Rather than dwell on the negatives (and there were quite a few) – suffice it to say I didn’t see everything on the agenda and I returned home in bad shape.  The trip was meant for “extreme mountain goats” – and I certainly didn’t qualify!!!

I will let pictures speak for themselves.  As you will see – we covered some very lovely territory!

The best part of the whole trip – I travelled with two of my very best friends!

European Plumbing

The last time I was in continental Europe –  and not on a cruise ship or a river boat –  was in 1970. Let me tell you, NOTHING has changed in all this time when it comes to bathrooms.

In hotels, you either have a very tall and skinny bathtub (to climb over) with a shower inside it – or you have a miniscule shower stall – so small that lifting an arm to clean an armpit is a major challenge.  In the tubs, as well, we found the taps stuck on the side of the tub – right where you stand to take a shower.  That armpit cleaning manoeuver in this case resulted in a blast of scalding or freezing water, depending on which way one turned……and accidentally bumped against the taps.   The toilets worked – and there were often bidets as well (great for washing out socks and undies).  In one hotel, the toilet was in a separate “closet” just wide enough for the john itself – not an inch to spare.  The door to this opened up against the door to the rest of the bathroom so one had to be very careful when opening these doors given two were sharing a room.  Calling out a warning when opening bathroom doors isn’t a usual routine.

In restaurants and public areas – it was a whole different story – and one that took me back those 40+ years.  You would think, with tourism being such a huge part of the economy, they might spend a euro or two on the bathrooms.  NOT A CHANCE.

We visited the very posh Villa of the Rothschild family – huge, now with a restaurant – apparently they hold weddings here – and ONE BATHROOM plus an outdoor cabin in the bushes.  If you don’t want to change the heritage of the building – add 6 more bush bathrooms and at least the line-ups would be more reasonable.

On three separate occasions that I know of, somebody got locked in the john – all women, of course.  Obviously the hardware didn’t work any better than the plumbing!   When you are late getting back to the bus and people start to worry about you – it’s embarrassing to be discovered stuck in the bathroom.

Several of us experienced the OOPS scenario where you walk into a bathroom in a restaurant or public area and find somebody of the opposite sex busy doing what they do in these places.  Many of the public bathrooms have one area with a sink in it – and then 2 separate areas for toilets (if you are lucky) – however – not every place had functioning doors – or even doors at all and it was rare to find a toilet seat.  One of my co-travellers even came upon an asian style toilet – that hole in the floor with marks for foot placement.  Oh my.

It truly is a mans’ world.
